At Blackhorse Judo Club we teach judo to children aged from 7 to 15 at three sites: St Matthias and Dr Bells School in Fishponds, Bristol, the Pyramid Youth Club in Filton and The Ridings International Academy in Winterbourne, South Gloucestershire.
The Club first opened in Downend on Thursday evenings in September 2005. Six months later, instructors from the club started teaching Judo on Tuesday evenings for the Pyramid Youth Club in Filton, taking over a long-established judo club.
In February 2008 the club opened an after-school session on Monday evenings at St Matthias and Dr Bell's School in Fishponds (which is now followed by an evening session open to all).
In March 2010 the Thursday evening sessions were moved to St Matthias and Dr Bells School, and the Club started a Friday evening session at The Ridings International Academy.
The club is run by highly qualified coaches with experience of teaching everyone from beginners through to experienced players training for major competitions.
Blackhorse Judo Club prides itself in teaching traditional judo under the guidance of the British Judo Council.
The sport of Judo was introduced in Japan over 100 years ago by Jigaro Kano, the founder of Judo. At Blackhorse Judo Club we believe that the traditions, history and ideals established by Kano are as important today as they were when Judo was first conceived.
Apart from the obvious fitness benefits that can be obtained from practising judo, you can also improve other individual skill, for example self-confidence, mental maturity and strength, discipline, dedication and a sense of community.
You will never know if you like judo until you try it out - all the instructors at Blackhorse Judo Club will be only too delighted to talk to you about all that we offer - so do come and take a look.
